Newsflash: Hallelujah for Equal Rights!

Everyone at Ms. is saying ‘Hallelujah!’ for the Episcopal Church approving the ordainment of Mary Glasspool and Diane M. Jardine Bruce, “the first two women to be elected as bishops in the 114-year history of the Los Angeles diocese.” Glasspool is also the first out lesbian to be granted ordainment by the church. The first gay man was ordained in 2003, but the uproar that it ensued resulted in a ban on gay bishops, which was lifted last year.

Approval was granted this week and ordainment is scheduled for May. Congratulations to both!

  1. If women are equal in God’s sight, then they are equal in their ability to answer their call to serve as priests and bishops and lead their flocks!

  2. Barbara A says:

Of course, women should be allowed into any and every office of the church. But why would we want to be? I was brought up Episcopalian and recently had occasion to be in an Episcopal church. It bothered me to hear a woman priest, with a little girl acolyte by her side, praising a “Father and Son” as the highest beings in the Universe.

I really think that for the sake of women and girls, organized religion just needs to go away.
