No (on 62) Comment: Rocky Mountain Low

“The decline of America began in Colorado in 1967 when it became the first state in the nation to legalize abortion…”

So begins the hyper-dramatized video advertisement (below) for Colorado’s “personhood” amendment–an extreme anti-choice ballot measure that would ban all abortion and restrict necessary health care for pregnant women for whom it may not be safe to carry a pregnancy to term. It could effectively outlaw birth control and emergency contraception if the full breadth of the amendment is considered.

This bizarre video is the only thing posted on the website ProLifeTeaParty.com and is supported by Personhood USA, an anti-choice group aggressively pushing for Amendment 62. In the wildly untrue propaganda piece, everyone from Richard Nixon to President Obama–who stars in the video as both the “Angel of Death” and the Joker from Batman–is an enemy of “life.” It would be laughable if it weren’t so utterly terrifying.

Need we say more? If you live in Colorado, vote No on 62.

  1. I live in Denver and have already voted (obviously NO on 62). In 2008 there was a similar measure that was much harsher and stricter than this. Although I sent in an early mail-in ballot I continue to receive calls from the offices supporting this measure. I have received about 3 a day since last week, and every time I say I voted and that I voted no. I am Christian and in some ways pro-life but I believe outlawing abortion is the wrong way to go about preventing them.

Prevent unwanted pregnancies, and you reduce the number of abortions performed each year.

Real sex education will prevent unwanted pregnancies. Free and affordable contraception will prevent unwanted pregnancies.

Give women and men the tools and knowledge to make the choices about their own bodies.

    • Wingnuts don't give a damn about reducing the number of abortions or unwanted pregnancies. It's all about punishing the dirty sluts for being female. Not even being sexual — but having a vagina/uterus.

      • It's angry/irrational comments like this that make people in the middle think that there are nuts on both sides. As much as I hate Right Wingnuts, I'm pretty sure they don't hate vaginas. I'm with Jon Stewart- Let's have a return to sanity.

  2. Despicable.

  3. Note the "$457 million spent on abortions internationally," actually refers to the US foreign assistance budget for family planning/reproductive health, mostly programmed through USAID in developing countries. This assistance is for family planning purposes, and has been prohibited (along with all forms of US foreign assistance, not just health-related funds), from being used to fund the performance of an abortion or to motivate or coerce anyone to perform an abortion (Helms Amendment, in place since 1973). Again, family planning leads to less unwanted pregnancies and therefore a lower incidence of abortion.

Not the only place the ad is inaccurate, but one that bothered me/is relevant to my work. I don't live in Colorado but hope 62 falls flat.

  4. I am pro-life but I am also pro-abortion. And I believe people who support a woman's right to make such decisions are also pro-life. Nobody wants to end a life. But it is cruel to allow someone to be born an unwanted child. Who will take care of this child if the mother can't??? Our prisons and our streets are filled with people who were unwanted children. I respect your beliefs. And I also respect that you have found a less confrontational way of communicating your beliefs. But with all do respect, sex ed and free condoms are widely available. People just choose not to use those condoms.

  5. Let's face it – GOP Greedy Old Party, aka Repugs obviously want fodder for war , for porno and for slave wage workforce here in America.
