We Heart: Feminist Sarah Silverman

Those of you who caught Conan last night on TBS might have noticed a surprise shout-out to Ms. How did this come to pass?

Well, back in October, a team of Ms. interns and staffers wo-manned a booth at the West Hollywood Book Fair. Not only did we get to enjoy the pet psychic, the create-your-own Jane Austen diorama booth and the Jedi training, we were also just feet from the table where Sarah Silverman sat down to meet fans and sign copies of her new book, The Bedwetter: Stories of Courage, Redemption, and Pee.

Naturally we decided to approach her with the gift of one of our signature “This is What a Feminist Looks Like” t-shirts (which come in a variety of colors and styles and make excellent holiday gifts). After a little trial and error, and some serious saleswoman-ship, we matched her with the perfect shirt, in the right size, color and style, which she sported fabulously for a feminist photo-op.

Apparently, we made quite an impression! We had no idea that Ms. Silverman would still be talking about the encounter months later, but last night the comedian recounted a rather funny version during her appearance on Conan.

I was sitting at this book fair…and these girls from the Ms. magazine booth came over, and they were really sweet, and they gave me this t-shirt that was like, “This is what a feminist looks like”…The truth is, if the t-shirt looked good on my boobs, I would wear it all the time, proudly, and this is what a feminist looks like.

We were pleased to hear Ms. Silverman confirm what we had been hoping when we presented her with the t-shirt, that indeed, she is what a feminist looks like. As evidence of her commitment to the welfare of women, she even included an impromptu PSA for women:

I have a lot to say to women. Tonight, if I can impart anything to women…all the women in America. I promise you, you do not need vaginal deodorant. You need a doctor.

Well said, Sarah.

We’re happy to know that the t-shirt has a good home, with an owner who’s proud to wear it–since it obviously looks good on her boobs!
