Facebook Expands Relationship Status

Finally something we can ‘Like.’ Facebook has just added two new relationship status options users can put in their profile: “in a civil union” and “in a domestic partnership.”
The changes were made as a result of partnerships Facebook has formed with the Network of Support, a coalition that includes the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, the Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network, and the Human Rights Campaign. Facebook joined forces with these organizations in October to combat anti-GLBT cyberbullying after a rash of suicides by gay youth.
Andrew Noyes of Facebook was quoted in the Huffington Post stating, “This has been a highly requested feature from users. We want to provide options for people to genuinely and authentically reflect their relationships on Facebook.”
GLAAD applauded Facebook in their blog. “By acknowledging the relationships of countless loving and committed same-sex couples in the U.S. and abroad, Facebook has set a new standard of inclusion for social media,” said GLAAD President Jarrett Barrios.
The option is now available for users in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia and France. You can update your relationship status here.
