5 Reasons To Be Cheerful

Going online can be a fraught experience for any feminist–you never know when you’re going to stumble across sexist trolls or more depressing news from the war on women. So we would be shirking our duty as a feminist media outlet if we didn’t share some sites we’ve come across recently that make us smile.

1. A Mighty Girl Need gift ideas for the children in your life–or your feminist inner child? This site boasts “the world’s largest collection of books and movies for parents, teachers, and others dedicated to raising smart, confident, and courageous girls.” The books and movies featured show girls that they “do not have to be relegated to the role of sidekick or damsel in distress.”

2. Feminist Harry Potter If you’re in the mood for a light-hearted take on the pressing need for more feminism in children’s movies, then have a look at Krystie Yandoli‘s Feminist Harry Potter Tumblr.

3. Music for Pixels For a blend of music and activism, check out this collaboration between anti-violence nonprofit The Pixel Project and various YouTube musicians. The site features a new music video PSA every month, aiming “to encourage hope and courage in survivors while inspiring men, women and youth to work together to end violence against women.” Proceeds from digital downloads go to charities combating VAW.

4. My Body Gallery  This photo-upload site supports a more personal form of activism: body acceptance. Aiming to “build a collection of photos that will help more women see themselves more clearly,” the site is a picture gallery featuring women’s bodies of all shapes and sizes. You can search by height and weight to find women similar to your own build. As one commenter notes, “I guess it just takes seeing someone beautiful who looks almost exactly like you to realize how perfect you really are.”

5. TextsFromHillary This new Tumblr depicting Hillary Clinton sending no-nonsense text messages officially wins feminist meme of the week. It’s one of those you-have-to-see-it-to-get-it things, so go scroll through it yourself—then you’ll understand why it’s an instant classic. The latest submission comes from the Secretary of State herself.
