Most Pinterest users pin DIY inspiration, vacation ideas and delicious recipes to their boards. Shelby Knox and Steph Herold pin feminists. Their board, “Feminists of Generation Now,” is an ever-growing response to a CNN piece published last fall titled “Where Are All The Millenial Feminists?” The CNN article claimed that women today are shying away from feminism due to negative “emotion[al] reaction[s]” to the word. And this past week, PBS aired Makers: Women Who Make America documentary, in which Meryl Streep narrates the questionable assertion that “older feminists have openly questioned why their daughters’ generation is not marching in the streets.”
Knox believes that millenial feminists are not missing, and her Pinterest board is dedicated to highlighting the “meaningful, intersectional work that promotes the rights of all people” being done by young feminists. The incredible list includes college students, artists, bloggers, academics, activists and writers, including a few who blog or write for Ms. (Avital Norman Nathman has a regular blog series called The Femisphere; Jennifer Pozner, founder of Women in Media & News, has written for Ms. magazine; and political strategist Atima Omara-Alwala is a recent blog contributor). We also have to give a shout out to millenial feminist and old friend Myra Duran, former National Campus Organizer at Feminist Majority Foundation and now the Policy Coordinator for California Latinas for Reproductive Justice.
Millennial feminists are “young, multicultural, strategic and looking out for each other” and their numbers are growing. Knox and Herold’s Pinterest board–which has become a collaborative project with the contributions of others–shows how these Gen Y feminists are making their voices heard and ready to run with any torches passed to them. More accurately, they’re lighting their own torches.
