Yes, Michelle, We Are Shocked By Your Homophobia

shockedAccording to news and social media reports coming out of San Francisco, long-respected singer-songwriter Michelle Shocked–known for such songs as “Anchorage” and “If Love Was a Train,” went on a stunning anti-gay marriage rant during her show last night at the club Yoshi’s.

She reportedly said to audience members, “You can go on Twitter and say ‘Michelle Shocked says God hates fags.” Tweeter @anile02 also reported that “She said she lives in fear that the world will be destroyed if gays are allowed to marry.”

People started walking out as she went on, and the club ended the show by turning off her mic and shutting off the lights.

Twitter has responded today with such comments as this one from @HollyFigueroa: “Love IS a train, @MSchocked, and so is marriage equality. You can’t stop it. I can stop buying your records, though.”

Last night Shocked tweeted, “Truth is leading to painful confrontation,” then went social-media-silent. Other than knowing that she had become a member of a Pentecostal Christian church (but was still active in progressive causes such as Occupy), one can only speculate where she was coming from with her hateful commentary (and why she chose San Francisco, of all places, to spread such a message). More will certainly be revealed, but the blowback has already begun to affect her professionally: Hopmonk Tavern in Novata, CA, has announced it’s cancelling Shock’s March 29 show there because of her remarks, and ETown in Boulder, CO, has cancelled her May 3 concert.

What a shame. The haters must have gotten their hands on her. Holly F. is right- love is a train. Guess Michelle Shocked got off just in time. As soon as word gets around the LGBT community, her fan base will be gone.
I’ve been a fan since her first album in the late ’80’s; but she’s lost my $$. We’ll be hearing an apology soon enough. Shame on her!

And before you say it, Michelle, you’re NOT a victim here, and your “free speech” is not being infringed upon. Freedom of speech is NOT freedom from the consequences of saying stupid, bigoted things. You’re free to say it, you said it, and others are free to react accordingly.

  3. Vanessa Emma Goldman says:

Wow, this is very strange. I had her first few albums, and always thought she was pretty much across the board progressive, feminist, pro LGBT and all that. Looks like she is trying to be the Ted Nugent of latter day folk-rock or something. I am very disappointed!

  4. It appears she really is [Miss] Shell Shocked. Feel free to call any/all of the venues hosting her upcoming dates and let them know you’d be happy if they cancelled her shows just like the venues in Novato and Boulder already have. What a shameful dummy she turned out to be. Go ahead and have your opinion, Michelle, but don’t think declaring your homophobia in San Francisco isn’t going to have an effect on your career.

Sister Shocked with the Campbell Brothers – featuring Disciples on the Move~
    Telluride Bluegrass Festival, ToHeavenURide, CO
    Price: $priceless (sold out, actually!)
Now, y’all know the Campbell Brothers, they’re great! Anointed and appointed…but when Ferg calls ME up and says, “Sister Shocked-you got any gospel left in you?” why then -brothers and sisters – Game On! Joining me and the Campbell Brothers, I’m introducing the outreach ministry Disciples on the Move, making their mountaintop debut with our awesome leader, a mighty woman of God, Evangelist Missionary Joann Daughtry. We shall rock out on Sister Rosetta and gospel standards (like Kumbaya) and then feature the messianic Hebrew Songs!! Glory!!! Bring tent. And Bible.

  5. For some unfortunates religion is a way to find comfort with their mental illness…it’s good she let it out and now we know. She can now play to her fellow cult members and they can have her….though maybe through the miracle of modern pharmaceuticals they’ll find a brain chemical she’s likely needing…though getting her to take ’em might be the tuff part.

  6. I hate this article brings up her joining a Pentecostal Church. I was raised in, and attend with my wife and kids, a very traditional Pentecostal Church and while some folks act like jerks, most are very cool. Stuff like this kind of makes us all look bad.

    • Nik, while I agree with you that the people at your church are almost certainly very cool, there are a HUGE number of born-again Christian types who save their Christian love for the people their preachers say are acceptable recipients. Please keep on being the good version of Christian, and protest those who claim to be Christian while slandering the principles YOU know to be good! Thanks, from a likewise “cool” (kind, compassionate, caring, giving) atheist.

  7. We shoulda known about Michelle Shocked in 2011: “You are looking at the world’s greatest homophobe.”

  8. So sad. Some people allow religion to do horrible things to their minds. Maybe she needs some deprogramming. Love her music, though. Surely there is a better person in there somewhere.

  9. Novato, CA
    Boulder, CO
    Eugene, OR
    Portland, OR
    Santa Cruz, CA
    Madison, WI…
have all canceled her shows. Her 25-year anniversary tour has been destroyed by her stupidity. Good.

  10. I have to confess I had no idea who Michelle Shocked was (I’m clueless when it comes to knowing the latest singers and music groups) until I read this. Now that I have, I’m glad to see that her homophobic remarks have had significant consequences for her. Maybe she, like that idiot Ted Nugent, will fade into obscurity sooner rather than later. I can dream it will happen, at least.

  11. Kathy Ruopp says:

Thanks, Ms., for a direct report about what happened.

  12. Sure, sure. Pentecostals are Mostly Really Cool People. Just keep saying it ~
