Just when it seems that anti-abortion advocates have done enough this week, Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) has agreed to introduce a bill in the Senate that would ban abortions after 20 weeks. A likely contender for the Republican presidential nomination in 2016, Rubio is expected to announce his sponsorship of the bill after the July 4 congressional recess.
Rubio’s anti-abortion bill is not expected to pass the Senate, and President Obama would veto it should it make it to his desk. The point of the bill seems to be to gain support for Republicans from conservative GOP voters. In any case, it continues the War on Women by once again trying to limit women’s choices in their reproductive care and subvert the legal right to abortion embodied in Roe v. Wade.
