Wendy Davis Stands Out on The Latest Issue of Ms.

“I’m rising on the floor today to humbly give voice to thousands of Texans who have been ignored.”

This was how Sen. Wendy Davis opened her epic 13-hour filibuster before the Texas state Senate, taking a heroic stand (literally!) for reproductive justice. Ms. magazine is proud to salute Sen. Davis on the cover of our Summer issue.

The new issue of Ms. also updates the seemingly endless stream of proposed state laws that threaten to close women’s health clinics in Texas, Virginia, North Carolina, Ohio and 10 other states. But women’s advocates are fighting back—such as healthcare providers in Wichita, Ks., who have stood up to extremists and opened a clinic offering full reproductive services to local women—the first of its kind since the assassination of Dr. George Tiller in 2009.

Ms. also takes readers to the rubble of Rana Plaza in Bangladesh, where financial greed combined with a culture of impunity allowed this bustling workplace to become a tomb for more than 1,000 garment workers, mostly young women.

Also in the Summer issue, you won’t want to miss:

  • A personal story from a lesbian wife and mother on how the repeal of DOMA changed her family’s life
  • The importance of empowering women and girls in South Africa in order to help end the AIDS pandemic
  • A review of two recent documentaries illuminating icons Angela Davis and Alice Walker, plus interviews with the filmmakers.

The new issue of Ms. will be on newsstands August 27 and is already on its way to subscribers. You can also carry Ms. everywhere on your iPhone, iPad or Android device with a convenient digital subscription.
