NBC announced last week that Donald Trump would host Saturday Night Live on Nov. 7. The response to the announcement was swift—and scathing.
The National Hispanic Leadership Agenda and other Hispanic groups wrote a letter to NBC CEO Stephen Burke and SNL executive producer Lorne Michaels saying they were “flabbergasted” by the decision to have Trump host the storied television show, and calling on the network to rescind the offer:
Donald Trump has yet to apologize for his bigoted comments about Mexican immigrants. Allowing Trump to host SNL will legitimize and validate his anti-Latino comments. … We are appalled that you would enable Trump’s hateful speech for nothing less than a ratings ploy and ask that you rescind the SNL invitation. How can SNL justify casting zero Latinas over 41 seasons and only 2 Latinos over the same period, while promoting Trump’s divisive speech toward Latinos?
Hispanic groups applauded NBC earlier this year when the network canceled its broadcasts of the Trump-back Miss Universe and Miss USA pageants and severed ties with the audacious business mogul after he called undocumented Mexican immigrants “rapists” and “killers.” But now, a MoveOn.org petition asking NBC to dump Trump, created by immigration activist Juan Escalante, has garnered more than 124,000 signatures and is growing quickly.
Trump has not only made appalling remarks about Latinos and immigrants, he is also known for his distasteful comments about women. Trump has flip-flopped on his stance about abortion (he most recently stated that he’s “pro-life”) and said certain women wouldn’t be employed if they weren’t beautiful.
Saturday Night Live has featured some of the great feminist comedians of our time—hi, Maya Rudolph, Amy Poehler, Tina Fey and so many others—why invite someone like Trump onto the show when he clearly doesn’t respect women’s talents, opinions or smarts?
Sign our petition urging NBC to #DumpTrump! The more voices shouting back at the network, the better they’ll hear us. Don’t give Trump a platform for hate.
