An unnamed source told Axios that Donald Trump’s White House dress code implores women to “dress like women.” Women across the Internet had a lot to say in response.
Trump—who previously owned beauty pageants—has never shied away from instructing women to look and act a certain way. Axios reports that women who worked at his campaign offices felt pressured to wear dresses to work in accordance with his expectations. He more than once declared that Hillary Clinton didn’t “look presidential.” He boasts about calling Rosie O’Donnell a “fat pig,” a “dog” and a “slob.” His years-long running of objectifying and critiquing women’s appearances didn’t slow during the presidential campaign—and clearly, the culture of outdated gender expectations he instated on the trail hasn’t changed.
Women on social media responded to the Trump’s administration definition of what a woman should look like—and their responses prove that there is no way to define how to “dress like a woman.” Women from different professions are tweeting pictures of them in their scrubs, flight suits and army fatigues using the hashtag #DressLikeAWoman. Other Twitter users are posting photos of women through history—from Josephine Baker to Sally Ride.
Here are 25 suggestions from the Twitterverse on how to #DressLikeAWoman.
Should it come as a surprise that Trump says women must “dress like a women” in his White House? Probably not. But Axios’ findings are just another reminder of what Donald Trump meant when he promised to “Make America Great Again”—and the uproar in response reminded us that women won’t let him take us back in time.
Of course, Trump’s expectations for appearance don’t just extend to the women in his White House. Men, too, must adhere to a set of unspoken rules revealed by Aios’ source.
“If you’re going to be a public person for him, whether it’s a lawyer or representing him in meetings, then you need to have a certain look. That look—at least for any male—you have to be sharply dressed. You should have a good physical demeanor, good stature, hair well groomed.”
Additionally, male white house staffers are supposed to be wearing Trump ties. (They can get away with an Armani.)
