A Conversation on Race, Gender and a Path Out of Poverty

In C. Nicole Mason’s book Born Bright, the author and scholar charts her course out of poverty and toward a life spent leading fights in the arena of public policy. (An excerpt from Born Bright appears in the Winter 2016 issue of Ms. Subscribe now to get a copy in print or through our app!)

Utilizing her own experiences as a woman of color who grew up in a low-income family and faced homelessness and hunger, Mason’s book shines a light on the systemic barriers that face marginalized communities attempting to share in the American dream.

Mason’s “insider story” is an important addition to the feminist discourse. That’s why Ms. is excited to be partnering with the Library Foundation of Los Angeles’ ALOUD program to host a conversation between Mason and our very own Education Director and Editor Karon Jolna that will cover topics like poverty, the future of feminism and how women’s stories can fuel progress.

Online registration for the event, which takes place on January 24 at Central Library at 7:15 P.M., is now open. Seats are free, but space is limited. Reserve your seats today to ensure you don’t lose your spot!
