Since its founding in 1972, Ms. has been reporting and truth-telling from the front lines of the fight for women’s equality, both in the U.S. and globally. Ms. covers a range of issues, including women’s and girls’ legal, political and social rights; gender-based violence; racial justice; environmental justice; health; LGBTQ equality; media representation; women’s history and more—all through a feminist lens.
Ms. interns work closely with the digital editor and social media editor to assist in daily maintenance of and produce content for MsMagazine.com. The internship offers plentiful opportunities for interns to build a writing portfolio and learn more about both feminism and digital journalism. Past interns have run dedicated columns; researched and reported features; adapted reported articles into shareable and engaging social media content; interviewed thought leaders, lawmakers and activists; made lifelong connections with feminists; and more.
Ms.’s internships range from five to 30 hours a week and coincide with academic semesters (spring, summer and fall) with the opportunity to extend the period if the intern wishes. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis.
Experience necessary: Qualified candidates will be strong writers and avid news consumers who care about feminist issues. College students, masters-level students and recent graduates are recommended to apply. Journalism and public writing experience is a bonus, but not required.
Compensation: Ms. interns will be paid $16 per hour. We encourage Ms. interns to seek outside funding from their universities or other grantees, if applicable.
Location: Ms. headquarters are in Los Angeles, Calif., but interns can be based anywhere. When possible, interns are welcome to join staff in-person at our office.
A Ms. intern can expect:
- To pitch, write and edit content—from researched and reported pieces to reviews, regular columns and more—for MsMagazine.com (learn how to edit for word choice, angle, flow, Ms. and AP style, and more)
- To assist in daily administrative activities including communications and research
- To fact-check (Ms. will provide an intensive training)
- To assist with social media production and promotion, including creating content for Instagram, Twitter, TikTok and more
- To assist with design/visualization for both social media and editorial
- Monthly one-on-one check-ins with internship coordinator
- To gain a real understanding of how nonprofit feminism journalism works
We strongly believe that diversity strengthens a publication and we encourage interns of all backgrounds to apply.
How to apply: Send a resume and cover letter to internships@msmagazine.com. Include up to three writing samples, either as links or attachments.
