As the U.S. prepares to mark its 250th birthday on July 4, 2026, questions loom over the celebration: Whose America gets remembered, whose gets erased—and how do we imagine and build a democracy that includes all of us?
FEMINIST 250is a new online initiative from Ms. magazine reflecting on the semiquincentennial of U.S. democracy from a feminist perspective, launched during Women’s History Month and running through this fall’s midterm elections, with a commemorative section in the Summer 2026 print issue (on newsstands July 14). The series explores how feminist histories laid the foundations that shaped 250 years of ideas about equality; delves into the lessons we can learn from the past fifty-plus years of feminist wins and losses; and puts forth ideas and policy proposals to reimagine a democracy that ensures equality and justice for all.

FEMINIST 250
The Founding Feminists series reclaims the stories too often left out of the official narrative: women who challenged the authors of the Declaration of Independence and later the U.S. Constitution for deliberately writing women out of America’s founding documents; Black women who resisted oppression from the start; Indigenous societies built around women-led governance; queer lives in revolutionary America; Asian women’s struggles for belonging and the long fight to make disability visible in our history. Feminist Lessons explores what each decade of modern feminist history can teach us about power, democracy, backlash and social change, drawing on the Ms. magazine archive. The series goes through the significant feminist wins and losses of the past several decades—1970’s through 2020’s—to show how feminists transformed American life. (Explore the series here.)
Feminist Futures taps thought leaders to put forward ideas and policy proposals that reimagine democracy and catalyze a future that ensures equality and justice for all of us. This portion tackles topics ranging from court reform and voting rights, to universal childcare and paid leave, with equal representation under the law at the heart of it, and includes essay contributions from LaTosha Brown of Black Voters Matter, Skye Perryman of Democracy Forward, Reshma Saujani of Moms First and others.
