New Fifteen Minutes of Feminism episode of Ms.’s On the Issues Podcast—Majority Rule #5, Our Government Represents Us

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE | APRIL 12, 2023

On the Issues with Michele Goodwin is a popular, issues and policy-focused podcast featuring feminist analysis, insightful conversations and exciting guests. This is the first podcast from Ms. magazine, a legacy feminist publication. In each bi-weekly episode, host Dr. Michele Goodwin and special guests will tackle the most compelling issues of our times, centering feminist concerns about rebuilding our nation and advancing the promise of equality.

A new episode—Fifteen Minutes of Feminism: Majority Rule #5, Our Government Represents Us (with Katie Porter)—is available now on Apple PodcastsSpotify and MsMagazine.com.

In the fifth of a series of episodes delving into The Majority Rules, in collaboration with Supermajority’s Education Fund, Dr. Goodwin is joined by U.S. Representative Katie Porter to dive into Majority Rule #5: “Our government represents us.” During the 2022 midterm elections, women voters across the U.S. made their voices heard, demanding access to safe reproductive healthcare. And yet, state legislatures—which purport to represent the people—continue to attack reproductive rights, proposing increasingly restrictive bans on abortion, with collateral consequences for reproductive healthcare more generally. In the face of these challenges, how can we work towards a government that truly represents us—and protects us?

A full transcript of the episode may be found here, as well as a few excerpts below:

“When I ran the first time in 2018, the most common question I got asked wasn’t about policy — what do I believe? What am I going to fight for? What am I doing to do? It was, what will happen to your children if you win?” —Katie Porter

“It matters to every person, it matters to every family, it matters to every human to have control of their body… This election showed us that people want to make their own decisions about healthcare and about starting a family.” —Katie Porter

“I think what we’re seeing now and what I saw certainly knocking doors and having conversations was a really delightful growing voice among men who are able to say the word abortion, men who are able to say abortion rights matter.” —Katie Porter
