FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE | SEPTEMBER 20, 2022
To mark National Voter Registration Day, Ms. magazine has launched “Women Saving Democracy” — the latest installment of the Ms. multimedia platform, Women & Democracy — in partnership with the Brennan Center for Justice and RepresentWomen.
With record numbers of women registering to vote every day, and abortion rights — and democracy itself — on the ballot, “Women Saving Democracy” offers a deep dive into the very state of our nation’s systems of democracy, explores how women’s leadership makes a difference, and assesses reforms that would ensure more fair representation and democratic outcomes. Clickhere to explore the project.
It features interviews with a slate of top women leaders who serve in an array of roles: Attorneys General Letitia James (New York) and Dana Nessel (Michigan); Secretaries of State Shenna Bellows (Maine), Leigh Chapman (Pennsylvania), and Tanesha Way (New Jersey); and current and former local election officials Natalie Adona (California), Kathy Holland (North Carolina), and Tonya Wichman (Ohio), among others. It also includes nine reported and narrative pieces: among those are a reflection from former West Virginia Secretary of State Natalie Tennant, a call to action for youth turnout for Secretary of State races, and an in-depth interview with Supermajority’s Amanda Brown Lierman on how to ensure more women are prepared to run, win, and lead in 2022 and beyond.
Ms. launched Women & Democracy in June 2022; see the inaugural installment here. Each quarter, Ms. publishes a new microsite, together with a dedicated partner, that focuses on key issues impacting full and fair representation. Sponsors for this Women & Democracy installment are Michelle Mercer and Bruce Golden, Craig Newmark Philanthropies, and Rockefeller Brothers Fund.
