We Heart: Lizzo’s Iconic BET Awards Performance

She stood atop a giant wedding cake, in a wedding dress and veil, and then ripped both articles off to reveal a lacy, white bodysuit and a huge pair of glitter sunglasses. She whipped out her famed flute and performed perhaps the coolest flute solo of the century while twerking.

In case you missed it, Lizzo’s live performance at the BET Awards on Sunday night was iconic.

The singer and rapper known for her self-confident, vibrant songs and persona performed “Truth Hurts” at the awards show—the hit that launched her decade of work into the mainstream and made her a global superstar.

But even in the midst of the celebrity cameos, colorful bouquets and lavish outfits that made it such a special moment, Lizzo’s trademark boldness and verve stole the show.

“I’m so damn free,” she sang, striking a final pose and laughing as neon pink light flooded the stage. “Thank you.”
