Robert and Margaret Hanley Family Director of the Notre Dame Washington Program. She is the co-author of A Century of Votes for Women: American Elections Since Suffrage (Cambridge 2020) and Counting Women's Ballots: Female Voters from Suffrage Through the New Deal (Cambridge 2016), and the author of The Politics of Women’s Rights (Princeton 2000).

Trump’s latest rhetoric reflects the ultimate gender stereotype: A woman’s place is in the home.

Rhetoric characterizing women primarily as wives and mothers harkens back to the earliest days of this republic. Now as then, such rhetoric fundamentally misrepresents the interests and identities of most women.
