5 Stars Who Have Taken a Stand for Equal Pay

Last month, Jennifer Lawrence spoke out about Hollywood’s gender pay gap in an essay for Lena Dunham’s website, Lenny. She described her fears of being considered “spoiled” or “difficult” by film industry executives while negotiating her salary for American Hustle, and wrapped up by proclaiming that she was done trying to please others.

She’s in good feminist company: Many stars have used their platform to draw attention to the national wage gap in recent years. That’s a good thing—the gap needs all the attention it can get. On average, women make 78 cents to every white man’s dollar, and the figures are even worse for women of color: African American women make 63 cents, and Latinas earn a meager 54 cents.

Below, take a look at some of the celebrities who have spoken out against the gender pay gap and pushed for women’s full equality.
