New Episode of Ms.’s On The Issues With Michele Goodwin Podcast: The Whiteness of Taxation: Wealth, Race and D.C. Statehood

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE | APRIL 13, 2021

On the Issues with Michele Goodwin is a popular issues-and policy-focused podcast featuring feminist analysis, insightful conversations and exciting guests. This is the first podcast from Ms. magazine, a legacy feminist publication. In each bi-weekly episode, host Dr. Michele Goodwin and special guests will tackle the most compelling issues of our times, centering feminist concerns about rebuilding our nation and advancing the promise of equality.

A new episode—The Whiteness of Taxation: Wealth, Race and D.C. Statehood (with Professor Dorothy A. Brown, Maura Quint, and Demi Stratmon)—is available now on Apple Podcasts, Spotify and MsMagazine.com.

It’s tax season! It’s time to talk race, taxation and D.C. statehood. The U.S. tax system raises serious questions about equity and inclusion and—according to our guests—taxation is at the root of many social and economic injustices.

This week, Dr. Goodwin and her guests ask: Who does the U.S. tax code benefit? Who does it leave behind? How does racism manifest in the U.S. tax system? What role does D.C. statehood play in all of this? What roles can we expect the Biden administration to play in the fight for D.C. statehood and the larger fight for racial and economic justice?

Dr. Goodwin is joined by Dorothy A. Brown, Asa Griggs Candler professor of law at Emory University School of Law; Maura Quint, co-founder and executive director of Tax March; and Demi Stratmon, lead organizer with 51 for 51.

Their conversation covered a wide range of topics; you can find a full transcript here, as well as a few excerpts below:

“[A] white high school dropout has more wealth than a black college graduate, so that’s the first thing I will say, okay?” —Dorothy A. Brown

“[W]hen we invest in black women’s well-being we just accidentally raise everyone else along with them and if we put the focus there we can uplift society as a whole.” —Maura Quint

“I would also like to bring in another point that DC residents pay some of the highest Federal taxes in our country.” —Demi Stratmon
