Keeping Score: How New York Made History on Roe v. Wade’s Anniversary

In every issue of Ms., we keep score—tracking research on our progress in the fight for equality, cataloging can’t-miss quotes from feminist voices and recording milestones for the movement. Now, we’ll be doing the same online. Welcome to this week’s (digital) installment of Keeping Score!

Lest We Forget

“There was never a woman with power that he ran up against until Pelosi. And he doesn’t know what to do with it. He’s totally in a corner.” Barbara Res, former executive vice president at the Trump Organization, told reporters from MSNBC that the President has “always felt that men are superior to women,” and that he even admitted as much to her.

“Let us remember that a fight means no person left behind… This is not just about identity. This is about justice and this is about the America we are going to bring into this world.” Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez delivered a powerful call for inclusivity within the feminist movement at the New York Women’s March.

How We’re Doing

+ New research from the UK found that one in four women at health clinics reported experiencing sexual or reproductive coercion in their lifetimes. “Given the many negative consequences of reproductive control—including unwanted pregnancies and unwanted abortions—we urgently need more studies on this subject, especially from Europe,” researcher and professor Sam Rowlands wrote in The Independent. “We also need a better understanding of why men engage in this behavior and how women can resist it.”

Milestones

+ Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Mary Oliver has died at 83.
