A federal judge sentenced music mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs on Friday to 50 months in prison—just over four years—marking an end to a trial against one of the most influential names in entertainment. Combs must also pay a $500,000 fine.
“To Ms. Ventura and the other brave survivors that came forward, I want to say first: We heard you,” Judge Arun Subramanian said after he pronounced the sentence.
Two years ago, the U.S. Senate did not have a single Black woman. And before that, only two Black women had ever served in the upper chamber of Congress. Lisa Blunt Rochester in Delaware and Angela Alsobrooks in Maryland will change the math, making history while bringing greater representation to Congress and maintaining the Democrats’ hold on the seats.
This is also the first time that two Black women will serve as senators together—and they will each take seats held by white male Democrats.
The president’s party typically loses seats in the midterms, and Demings and Beasley each lost in Republican-leaning battleground states, Decision Desk HQ projects.
Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) women make on average 75 cents for every dollar earned by white men. In other words, it takes about 16 months for them to make what white men make in a year.
Vigilante action in the form of policing, surveillance and violence has long endangered people of color. That reality worries some experts who fear Texas’s latest anti-abortion law—which empowers private citizens to sue anyone they suspect of providing, or aiding and abetting an abortion—will disproportionately target people of color.
