Isabel Guzman previously served as the 27th administrator of the Small Business Administration under President Biden and was the fifth Latina woman to serve in the Cabinet. She cites serving in Biden’s Cabinet, which was majority-women and the most diverse Cabinet in U.S. history, as ‘humbling’ and an “honor.”

Since leaving the Biden administration, Guzman is now on the frontlines of corporate leadership, helping CEOs confront the reputational dangers of AI, DEI and disinformation. In the whirling, swirling hellscape of illegality and cruelty that is the current American political scene, it’s hard to keep track of all the individuals and groups demonized, deported and derided by an administration seemingly motivated by a Machiavellian desire for power that might make Machiavelli himself blush with shame. In the midst of an apocalyptic news cycle, one targeted segment of the population seems to be fading from view: women.

But let us not, as Abigail Adams wrote so many years ago, forget the ladies. “Remember, all men would be tyrants if they could.”

As Reproductive Rights Collapse, Funders Are Disappearing. Why?

Grassroots organizations are on the frontlines of defending human rights at this moment. Yet, it’s alarming that major funders are leaving the field right when groups working to defend bodily autonomy and democracy need them most. 

In the 2024 presidential election, we saw the consequences of what happens when donors abandon grassroots organizations—where a billion dollars were raised for the Harris campaign at the expense of movement organizations in key battleground states. In a presidential election lost to low voter turnout, the decision to underfund grassroots groups—those best equipped to knock on doors and mobilize voters—proved dangerously short-sighted.

White Plight: Trump’s Embrace of White South African ‘Refugees’ Is a Racist Bullhorn

This week, Afrikaner “refugees” began arriving in the U.S.—some of the only refugees welcomed by the Trump administration. These white South Africans claim they are being persecuted at home: That white farmers are being attacked; that South Africa is not a safe place for them to live.

Much of the criticism of Trump’s decision to end refugee resettlement from just about everywhere else on the planet while welcoming a group that really isn’t facing particularly severe persecution has been derided as “political.” And it certainly is a stunt intended to provoke liberal outrage. But we should just call it what it is. It’s not “political.” It’s not a dogwhistle.

It’s racist.

This obvious troll from Trump (by way, I suspect, of Elon Musk and Stephen Miller) shows that, if they have their way, all the power will be white power.

Republican Representatives Are Refusing to Meet With Their Constituents, So Democrats Are Doing it For Them

As voters in all 50 states feel the effects of federal layoffs, rising prices and cuts to social services—part of a far-right agenda that no one voted for—clips of constituents confronting their representatives are going viral. In response, the National Republican Congressional Committee, chaired by Rep. Richard Hudson (R-N.C.), has advised Republicans in Congress to stop holding in-person town halls with constituents.

Now Democrats are heading to Republican districts where the representative is conspicuously absent—including Hudson’s district in Alamance County, N.C., which in 2024 swung for Trump over Kamala Harris 53-47.

“If you’re here, and you voted for Trump in the past, my message is simple: I’m sorry you were lied to, but welcome to the team,” said Rep. Maxwell Frost (D-Fla.).

—Legislators in Nebraska are advancing a bill that would require abortion providers to bury or cremate fetal remains and embryonic tissue after an abortion, leaning into fetal personhood arguments.

This week marks the 100th day of Donald Trump’s presidency, and a record number of Americans are unhappy with him and his administration.

During Trump’s first term, public demonstrations of disapproval were rapid and massively visible. This time around, it’s building in a different way.

Now is the time for all of us to practice democracy daily—by staying informed; talking with our friends, coworkers and family members; calling our representatives; and showing up at meetings, rallies and events.
