Newsflash: Texas Woman’s U. to Offer Ph.D. in Women’s Studies

The nation’s largest women’s university (but its programs are open to men) has been approved to offer a Ph.D. in women’s studies. That makes it the first university in Texas and one of only 15 in the country to offer this degree in the field. As women’s studies department chair Claire L. Sahlin put it,

Graduates of the program will be prepared to meet the growing regional, national and international needs for professors of women’s studies and leaders of nongovernmental, social service and research agencies that address women’s issues.

AnaLouise Keating, director of the Ph.D. program, promises “transdisciplinary and transformative dialogue” within the program–which will continue TWU’s longstanding commitment to women’s studies. The school requires all students, regardless of their major, to take three hours of multicultural-women’s studies.

  1. It’s actually Texas Woman’s University. Not women’s. Great school! Very excited to hear the news, I had considered going there for my Master’s in Women’s Studies.

I went there because of the three hours in ‘women’s studies and multicultural studies as core curriculum’. This requirement for a Texas university impressed me.

Then I got my MA in women’s studies. I was also impressed with how intergrated the faculty of this (now) department were with the rest of the campus. They did not just have a ‘center’. It was the whole run of the campus–and a say in the knowllege of all students.

It’s disappointing that UT gets portrayed as the ‘liberal’ school because this place (founded by suffragists) has it beat.

Imagine a campus where your white male classmates are gennuinely interested in and knowlegeable about multicultural and/or women’s history.

Awesome. One of the schools I am looking at for my MA.
