Looking to spread some feminist cheer this holiday? We’ve got you covered! Check out these ideas:
Let’s start with our top pick for everyone on your list, a full year of Ms. or a membership renewal. Sure, we’re a little biased, but right now all memberships are 50 percent off, so there’s no better time to fill the world with Ms. readers. The gift of feminist consciousness delivered straight to your door is perfect for your mother, sister, daughter, son, boyfriend, girlfriend, partner, even your boss! Gift a year of Ms. to your dentist’s office or your hair salon and help spread the feminist message. Or join our program to donate Ms. to women in need in prisons and women’s shelters. Whoever gets the gift of Ms. this holiday is sure to appreciate it all year long. (Well, OK, maybe your sexist brother-in-law won’t immediately appreciate it, but won’t you appreciate knowing he’s getting a feminist education?)
2. Vintage Ms. Cover Holiday Cards
Want to support Ms. in another way? Send a message of hope, peace and equality this season with our one-of-a-kind vintage holiday cards! This set of 10 cards features the iconic December 1972 Ms. cover, designed by artist Bea Feitler.
3. Woman-made Afghan Crafts
But enough about us. You also can support Afghan women and girls with your holiday shopping. All proceeds from the sale of handmade crafts, like this jewelry set, go directly to an Afghan women-led non-profit providing support to women and girls in Afghanistan.
4. Cozy Feministing Blanket
We’re always in favor of supporting fellow independent feminist media outlets, and really like this Feministing stadium blanket with the awesome Feministing logo–a “mudflap girl” silhouette flipping the feminist bird. Cozying up in that at a game, you’ll definitely make a statement. Plus “all proceeds go to keeping Feministing smart, snarky and sustainable.”
5. Life-Changing Gifts from Heifer International
What says the holidays more than a real live goat? Heifer International lets you give livestock to poor families in a loved one’s name, with options to fit virtually every budget. Check out this year’s catalog, where you can choose a meaningful gift that helps poor women, children and families around the world become self-reliant.
6. Homemade Personal Treasures
The Crunk Feminist Collective has some fantastic ideas for alternative feminist gifting this year, many of which involve homemade presents. Example: “Compile a cookbook of your families’ most cherished recipes and include a brief bio of every cook.” Check out the rest of the list here.
7. Adorable Mini-Feminist Gear
What could be cuter than a “This is What a Feminist Looks Like” onesie? This organic infant one piece is sweatshop-free and made in the U.S.A., and makes the perfect gift for the babies on your list! And for the other small people in your life, this 100% Union-Made in the U.S.A. preshrunk cotton tee is available in toddler and youth sizes.
8. Beloved Feminist Nonfiction
Have a feminist bookworm on your list? Peruse the Ms. online readers’ choice top 100 feminist non-fiction books countdown for the perfect addition to their library. (If you make your purchase by clicking our links to Powells, you’ll also be supporting the free-to-read Ms. Blog!)
9. A Message of Love
Holiday giving isn’t limited to friends and family. Just Detention International (JDI) suggests one very meaningful way to give this season—by sending a holiday message to an incarcerated survivor of prison sexual violence. Your message will be transcribed by hand into a card by a JDI volunteer and delivered to a currently incarcerated person who has experienced sexual violence while detained. The Curvature has some examples of messages that have been sent and responses from past recipients that demonstrate how powerful this gesture is.
10. Independent Feminist Media
And finally, there are several other great independent feminist magazines for readers of all ages that you might consider. Check out Bitch, Shameless, make/shift, BUST, Teen Voices and New Moon.
