Examining nursing homes, prisons, jails, psychiatric hospitals and immigration detention centers through a disability lens allows for creative redesigns that question the very function of these institutions. It’s time to unite the movements for abolition, decarceration and defunding police, and invest in long-term, community-based solutions—rather than disconnected, piecemeal reforms.
The coronavirus surge is likely to get worse over the coming weeks and months. The U.S. has a long history of taking on challenges and leading by example. We still have a chance to seize this unique moment to completely change the way we care for the health of our citizens.
It goes without question that farm workers are among the most essential workers, not only in California but in the United States as a whole. Crops have still been planted, tended, and harvested so that all can enjoy their daily meals. But at what—or whose—cost?

A recent survey of more than 20,000 Spanish-speaking domestic workers conducted by the National Domestic Workers Alliance (NDWA) has revealed a rapid and sustained loss of jobs and income that’s resulted in widespread housing and food insecurity.
