As the Ms. Blog recently reported, a new Pentagon study confirms that militarized sexual violence (MSV) is on the rise. Yet, perpetrators regularly escape punishment and often re-enter the civilian world with no criminal record.
A bill that would have made it easier for domestic violence victims to obtain protective orders against their abusers has failed in the Maryland House Judiciary Committee. According to The Washington Post, “H.B. 700 would have brought Maryland into conformance with the practices of every other state in the country.”
Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy holidays as much as the next person, but St. Patrick’s Day is one of the only holidays based on binge drinking (besides Purim and the U.S.’s debased version of Cinco de Mayo). It’s hard to get behind a holiday that potentially increases the risk of violence and sexual assault. Obviously alcohol isn’t solely to blame, but its constant presence in rape and assault cases is undeniable.
