In the latest attack on women, the Taliban has ordered pharmacies in Kabul and Mazar-e-Sharif to stop selling any form of contraceptives. The Taliban has called family planning and the use of contraception “Western” and “forbidden” in their interpretation of Sharia law.
The Islamic Republic’s existence depends on controlling women because this is also how they control men. But for brave young people, the slogan ‘Woman, Life, Freedom’ doesn’t represent three ideas, but rather one: Only in a world that truly respects women can liberty prevail.
The truth is that the ERA is very much alive today, and this terrifies anti-equality activists and columnists alike. We don’t need to start over. Like Professor Tribe said, we have met the requirements of Article V and just need the ERA to be recognized by Congress as valid.
