The last month has been a real whiplash for women. Let’s remember what was hurled our way. Plus—as we approach the midterm elections, Republican lawmakers have continued the ruthless attack on abortion access nationwide. But will it cost them?
The defeat of Donald J. Trump feels like emerging from a misogyny-trauma-hangover. The fact that he was ever elected and, as of this writing, has received over nine million more votes than his first run, is a massive global metaphor for rape culture.
For survivors of abuse and those who care for them, it was traumatic to watch his first ascendance to power, horrific to live through, and dehumanizing to have the prospect of a second term dangled in front of us. From the perspective of a women’s studies professor and life-long-feminist, one who is closer to sexual assault than anyone likes to be, the whole process felt traumatic.
The War on Women is in full force under the Trump administration. We refuse to go back, and we refuse to let the administration quietly dismantle the progress we’ve made. We are watching.
Bill Barr’s Justice Department attempted (unsuccessfully) to argue in court that those harmed by Trump’s lies—such as rape survivor E. Jean Carroll—should not be able to sue him for the harm he causes.

This week: Trump’s patronizing comments about fallen U.S. soldiers.; Trump ends federal agencies’ anti-racism trainings; Cohen calls Trump a racist, “sordid, mob-like figure”; Trump uses the DOJ (and taxpayer money) to fight E. Jean Carroll’s defamation case; and Trump admits to criminal negligence on tape.
In “A Miscarriage of Justice,” Sue details her own sexual assault and the subsequent miscarriage she experienced as a teenager. She relates her experiences to #MeToo and current misogynistic legislation and destructive misinformation regarding rape and the pregnancies that can occur as a result.
Women’s Studies matters because power inequities exist within every social and political structure, and patriarchy and misogyny are central causes of those power imbalances.
