The evidence is irrefutable: Racism is getting away with murder as the leading cause of maternal and infant deaths and premature births among Black women.
“Aretha Franklin, the Queen of Soul, is dead.” That line plays in my mind like a badly scratched record, hiccupping at one point—“is dead, is dead, is dead” repeating itself over and over again.
It is not a “culture of secrecy” that must end in politics. What must end is our gendered culture that has privileged men’s desires and needs over the safety and security of women.
