What’s at Stake: LGBTQ Civil Rights

When it comes to LGBTQ rights, President Trump says one thing but does another. The National Center for Transgender Equality cites at least 69 anti-transgender and anti-LGBTQ actions since Trump took office.

Questions for 2020 Candidates:
* Do you support or oppose a constitutional amendment to outlaw same–sex marriage?
* Do you support including LGBTQ citizens in laws that prohibit workplace and housing discrimination? Have you, or would you, co–sponsor the Equality Act to do that?
* Do you support President Trump’s rollbacks of transgender rights in the military, health care, and access to homeless shelters?

There is still much work to be done to ensure that LGBTQ Americans can live safe, happy lives and receive equal protection in all areas of life. As the 2020 election draws nearer, now is the time to pay attention to the precarious position that our rights are in. Here’s what’s at stake for the LGBTQ community in 2020.

LGBTQ Progress Started in the Streets—Not the Courts

While Obergefell v. Hodges represented an indisputable victory for LGBTQ legal rights in the U.S., it’s important to consider that for any marginalized group, progress doesn’t come just through acceptance by legal institutions—and acceptance by legal institutions doesn’t necessarily translate to cultural acceptance. In fact, a lot of the progress that our community has fought viciously for happened outside of courtrooms. It happened in the streets.
